workhorse pens
why fountain pens?
fountain pens are amazing! For ages I struggled in finding a "standard" pen that could do it all, which unfortunately doesn't really exist! gel/ballpoint/etc for me have always had issues with ink consistency and also the worry that once I run out of ink I won't be able to find another pen like it or an ink refil!

this is where fountain pens come in, due to having interal reservoirs of ink, they can pretty much be used forever as long as you are careful with them/they don't break - plus if there is a pen body you really love, but not the nib... just change it! you can either change the entire nib unit, the nib itself, or just send it to a nib tuner! (we even have one in aotearoa)

if you are interested in fountain pens I highly recommend the jinhao 82 as a first pen! they are cheap, come in a ton of colours, quite a few nib options, and aren't daunting to use as they just utilise a standard cartridge/converter system. Sometimes I see kaweco sports or lamy safaris suggested as a first pen but with those coming in at around 50nzd a jinhao 82 is 1/5th of the price.

as for inks, just use any colour you'd like that's fountain pen safe! I find myself using this website a lot for checking inks out as their reviews are quite detailed and provide comparisons with different colours as well.
